Each Recovery is Different
Just as every person is unique, so is their mental ‘illness’ or mental ‘suffering’. Therefore no two people can recover in exactly the same manner, though they may have common areas. Recovery, therefore has to be customized and adapted to each person’s need-just like their shoes. One size does not fit all.
A way for recovery from mental illness can be created for most people, in enabling environments and with the assistance of a supportive network of family and professional caregivers. However, despite this, vast number of people do not recover from the consequences of serious mental illnesses and frequently remain dependent on their families and society as a whole for all times to come.
At Hansadhwani we have been working on this question, for long before the founding of the organization. The organization has been founded with the objective of bringing various resources into the pool of alternatives available for people to recover and rehabilitate in society, even if they have once been given the labels of serious mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder or any other such condition or disorder.
People are not their disorders. Disorders are outcomes of the inability to handle suffering, which is the outcome of the daily process of being alive, left unexpressed. It is important that we learn new ways to deal with suffering, rejection, failure, loss, bereavement, and other outcomes, without losing our inner and outer balance- something which happens in the event of a mental illness.
At Hansadhwani we are frequently creating new programs that assist individuals and families in recovering from serious mental illnesses. These progams are suitable for their needs, in accordance with the severity of their suffering and condition.
We offer two kinds of counseling in mental ‘illness’ related issues- to individuals and to families. We encourage families to participate in counseling together, wherever feasible. But when families are non-cooperative, unable to come or there are other issues, we do not hesitate to work with individuals.
Kindly give us an opportunity to assist you and we promise you will not be disappointed.

Recovering Oriented Counseling
Counseling is an exercise in helping people arrive at a solution, within their circumstances, in a manner that ensures their welfare, growth and autonomy. While counseling can be offered in diverse areas such as career counseling, marriage counseling, school counseling, and scores of other kinds of counseling, we specialize in Recovery Oriented Counseling.
Recovery Oriented Counseling in mental illness is a new form of counseling support offered to people who have been given a diagnosis of some mental health issue, or to those who think they could be suffering from one. This counseling is derived from a philosophical practice which does not see people as mentally ‘ill’, but as humans suffering from whatever situations they deal with in their day-to-day life. We do not have a psychiatry or clinical psychology derived worldview of mental ‘illness’, but values derived from collaborative practices. To read further please read our research.
Living, as we all understand, is a simple yet complex activity. One ‘easy’ day can be followed by a really ‘difficult’ day. Due to certain situations which anyone can have at any time, living can become difficult and it may overwhelm some. That does not mean, people cannot learn newer ways to deal with these situations. The mind is ever ready to learn new ideas, if one is ready for it. And this is where counseling support can assist people also given serious mental health diagnosis, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, OCD, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety, and so forth.

The truth about mental illness is that it can always pass- without becoming permanent. But how many know this? Or even if they know this about another, believe it cannot be true for then? Most believe that mental illness is a permanent part of their lives and will continue till its end. This is not the only truth- for scores of people recover all the time, all over the world, using different ways. Their recoveries happen to the extent they go off medications, and have no relapses of any sort, including those having histories of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Perhaps one may find it difficult to believe, but it is true. Scores of people recover from serious mental illnesses, but do not talk about them in a public way, due to the stigma attached to mental illness.
Recovery from mental illness is not a chance or accident that happens for a few and not others. There are scores of people, organizations, institutions all around the world who are devoted towards working for recovery from serious mental illness, including us at Hansadhwani, in India. People are constantly into search and research, thinking of newer ways in which people can recover from mental illnesses, even after being on medication for long years. However, we do not insist whether someone should take medication or not- it is entirely their own choice. Pharmacological support is only one part of the solution for anyone- if they believe it is working for them. The rest also has to be offered, which we do in ways which are honed by years of experience, research and helping many take the recovery road.
